Hiking the Hogback
Hogback Mountain is a southern member of the Huron Mountain chain just north of Marquette Michigan. The top is rocky and largely "bald", putting you well above the top of the local treeline. Views of Lake Superior are stunning. Forest rolls out beneath you in all directions for dozens of miles. Below are some photos I took on Saturday, 4th October, on a hike to the top with my son Jeff and his friend Ryan.
Ryan and Jeff on a rocky outcrop not far from the parking area.
Hogback is in the background.
A low and swampy area on the trail.
Jeff inside a sleeping-shelter constructed by person unknown.
Ryan and Jeff on top of Hogback.
Lake Superior in background. Looking towards the northeast.
Lots of rock to clamber about on at the top of Hogback.
Another view of the kids having fun on the rocks at the top of Hogback.
Some windblown (and dead) trees as seen from the top of Hogback.
Harlow Lake is the very small lake in the background.
There lies some excellent mountain-biking.
View of Presque Isle in Marquette.
Some of the Pictured Rocks are visible in the upper-left background.
(You have to look very closely to see the cliffline, but it is there)
Kids had a great time. So did dad.
And good exercise too!
Hey there! If you made it this far, thanks for looking. And your reward is not far! Click the image below to be taken to a 360-degree, panoramic view from the top of Hogback that I stitched together from 18 photographs that I took while rotating in a circle.
